The Buccaneer Explorer: William Dampier's Voyages

by local author GERRY NORRIS

William Dampier

Hardington Mandeville author Gerry Norris's anthology of extracts from the writings of East Coker buccaneer William Dampier has recently been republished in paperback with a new introduction.
Dampier was a notable travel writer, explorer, hydrographer, botanist, navigator and precursor of Darwin in his grasp of migration and sub-species. Current literary scholarship has revealed his extensive influence on our first two great English novels, Defoe's Robinson Crusoe and Swift’s Gulliver's Travels, further increasing his stature.
There is a handsome plaque commemorating Dampier in East Coker church.

The book is available from Waterstones in Yeovil or online from Amazon.
