HARDINGTON AND PENDOMER WI
MINUTES OF THE MONTHLY MEETING HELD ON
11TH JUNE 2008 AT 6.00PM IN ILCHESTER
Present: 27 members.
This was our annual Out Meeting and took place in Ilchester where we were met by Gerry Masters who talked to us about Ilchester’s long historical past dating back 2,600 years.
It was an important town in Roman times with the Fosse Way from Axminster to Lincoln passing through. The town was the seat of county administration for many years with the Sheriff and county MP being elected in the shire hall albeit with much bribery and corruption – “Has anything changed?” asked Mr Masters!! The county goal was also sited at Ilchester. It had a terrible reputation for cruelty and torture. We visited the Church of St Mary Major which became the parish church around 1502. The wonderful old stone walls made from recycled ham stone and blue lyass stone have remnants of wall paintings behind the pulpit. Mr Masters then took us to the small museum situated in the Town Hall which traces the history of Ilchester. A very interesting tour – so much history right on our doorstep!
Elaine Gilmore thanked Gerry Masters on our behalf and we then went to Capozzoli’s Restaurant where we enjoyed a very nice meal and much noisy conversation!
Vice President and Secretary, Jenny Dodd conducted a short business meeting before the meal.
Apologies for Absence: Fiona Chadwick, Mary Spilsbury, Janet Cuff and Sue de Boehmler.
