Flower Arranging Teaching Day: To be held on Saturday 25th July from 10am until 3pm at a cost of £10.00. Liz Sawtell gave details about the day and the arrangements. Those attending would be doing three arrangements:- 1: “shades of colour”; 2: “sculpted by nature” using wood and foliage and 3: “an arrangement with a historical theme” – the first two to be done before lunch and the third after lunch. Any other members wishing to attend to give their name of Rachel or Sally.

Future of WI Groups: As President Jenny and Secretary Rachel were going to attend a special meeting of presidents and secretaries to discuss this, Jenny wished to ascertain what the members’ feelings were about this – how do we run the Groups in the future? The members agreed that the groups should be run less formally with a skittles competition still being retained.

October Meeting: The speaker at this meeting would be Jayne Jones’ son-in-law, Mark Piper, who works for the British Board of Film Certification. As the committee thought that this might appeal to a wider audience, Jenny asked the members if they would be willing for husbands/ friends/ partners to come along even although this meeting followed our Open Meeting in September. The members voted that members’ partners only should be invited.

Any other business:

  1. Sue Phillips said she was looking for members to donate good condition bras which would be taken to Romania.
  2. Jayne Jones asked for a meeting of all those members interested in helping with, or being on, the Carnival float to get together after the business meeting to decide on a theme and to arrange a time for decorating the float.

Finally Jenny thanked Liz Brown for her hospitality and presented her with a small present

Next Meeting: 9th September – Open Meeting – Cheese and Wine Evening with speakers Mike Davies (Dorset Blue Vinney) and Reg Wilkins (St Austell Brewery).

After the conclusion of the Business Meeting the members enjoyed a delicious cream tea and a chat in Liz’s lovely garden.
