REPORT FOR MARCH - BEING A MAGISTRATE

36 members and 2 guests attended the meeting on the 12th March when President, Fiona Chadwick welcomed our two speakers, Tricia Cook and Roger Allan who had come to talk to us about Being a Magistrate. An interesting and informative talk followed with Tricia and Roger explaining their roles as magistrates in South Somerset.
They explained the rigorous interviewing process they have to go through before being accepted, and how they have to be representative of their local community and to have insight and knowledge of that community. South Somerset has 62 magistrates who are equally divided between men and women. Magistrates are not paid but do get expenses.
Many different types of cases are dealt with, including theft, vehicle crime, domestic violence and assault. Questions were taken, with members bringing up many interesting points.
The vote of thanks was given by Brenda Bickerton.

The meeting continued with the business. Fiona reported that the Village Breakfast has been a great success and we have donated £400 to Marie Curie Cancer Care, our chosen charity for this year. We are also going to buy some useful kitchen utensils for use at future functions, such as a good tin opener and tongs. Fiona thanked everyone who had helped for all their hard work and gave a special mention to member, Vivien Cherry and non-member, Eve Lloyd who had spent the entire morning washing up! 125 cooked breakfasts and 8 continental breakfasts had been served. Well done everyone and thank you to those of you who came to eat them!

Members were reminded that the Crewkerne Group Quiz is to be held in Hardington this year on Monday, April 14th at 7.00 pm. We hope to see as many members as possible supporting this event.

Well done to Audrey Marsh who was presented with the Skittles cup having an average score of 36·6.

Our next meeting is on 9th April and will be our Birthday Party, for which we are planning an Italian Supper. New members and guests will be most welcome.
