REPORT FOR JULY - FILM NIGHT

President, Fiona Chadwick welcomed 25 members and 11 guests to our meeting on a wet and miserable evening which had followed a day of continuous rain – this is summer!

Fiona conducted a short business meeting reminding members of the Flower & Craft Show on 30th August and asked for volunteers to serve the teas, proceeds of which go to WI funds. Two members, Marina Barnard and Liz Brown will be running the cake stall and they welcome donations from anyone (not just WI members) for their stall. Tray bakes for the teas and cakes etc. for the cake stall can be brought to the village hall on the morning of the show.

This was our Comedy Film Night to which husbands and friends had been invited. Unfortunately, due to the dire weather, attendance was not as good as we had hoped, especially as this was to be our fund raising evening for Somerset WI @ 90. However, those who did brave the weather were treated to two short films starring Eric Sykes et al, Rhubarb, Rhubarb and Mr H is Late, and after the interval Futtocks End with Ronnie Barker. Wine, soft drinks, popcorn and sweets were for sale and the raffle had film based prizes, of cinema tickets and books.
President, Fiona Chadwick, thanked her committee for their hard work in setting up the evening and for the support of the WI husbands, Ray Moulden, John Gilmore, Jonathan Chadwick and Brian Dodd who made sure the films ran and the wine was poured!!
Sue Phillips, on behalf of the members, thanked Fiona and her committee for coming up with such an original idea for an entertaining evening.

On Wednesday the 16th July 39 members and husbands enjoyed an outing to Sherborne arranged by Rosemary Richards with Eve Lloyd. We started at Sherborne Abbey with a guided tour of the Abbey – a beautiful building with fan vaulted ceilings and a wonderful new stained glass west window.
Following our Abbey tour we were served with refreshments on the school lawn and then set off on a tour of the school with an old Shirburnian. The school is an eclectic mix of the old and new with some beautiful and not so beautiful historic buildings fitted out with up to the minute facilities. The boys here certainly are very fortunate to have such a good start in life. We were then taken to The Old School Room where we were served with a superb dinner. A lovely end to an interesting and enjoyable Sherborne visit.

Our next meeting will be on 10th September and is to be an open evening. Our speaker is Bonny Sartin of the Yetties. Everyone is welcome to join us and tickets at £3.00 each for visitors, will be on sale at Springfield Stores at the end of August. Refreshments of Cider, Apple Juice and Homemade Apple cake will be available. Please put the date in your diaries!
