REPORT FOR MAY
President Elaine welcomed 21 members and one guest, Linda Dewar, Karen Dodge’s sister, to the May meeting. Five members received birthday posies this month – Anne Lunt, Cecilia Dack, Pauline Grassam, Elaine Gilmore and Rachel Moulden.
The members agreed that The Messenger and The Village Hall would each receive £250 from the Village Breakfast profit. They also agreed that, subject to space, non WI members should be allowed to join our Interest Groups if they wished but that they should perhaps make a small donation.
Although still a long way off plans for our Open Meeting on Wednesday 13th October were discussed. The speaker will be Mr Roy Kibble whose talk is entitled “Secrets from the Park – Bletchley Park Enigma Machine”. This should be a very interesting talk so put the date in your diary now. The cost will be £5.00 and tea and cakes will be served.
Liz Brown has arranged a visit to Athelhampton on 8th July but, as there has been a very poor response so far, this outing may have to be cancelled which is disappointing.
The date for the next Banner get together has been arranged for Thursday 10th June at 2.00pm at Sadlers and any member who would like to make a contribution either with the making of the Banner, with ideas, or even if just interested in seeing how the work is progressing, is very welcome to go along.
Vivienne Ford is arranging a visit to the Swan Theatre to see “Vincent in Brixton” at a time to be agreed during the week 18th to 26th June and Sue Phillips reminded the members about the Eco Days Out at Coker Wood Cottage on 6th and 13th June. She also asked if any member would be willing to help with the WI refreshments at the Bath and West Show on Saturday 5th June.
Daphne Creed then gave a clear and interesting presentation on the resolution which had been chosen to go forward to the AGM in Cardiff which was worded as follows: “This meeting urges HM Government to introduce clear and mandatory country of origin labelling on all meat, poultry and fish products sold in this country”. The members unanimously agreed in favour of the resolution.
The business concluded, the members were then able to peruse the Bring and Buy Stall in aid of ACWW whilst enjoying a chat and a cup of tea.
On the following Wednesday, the 19th May, Hardington and Pendomer WI were hosts to the Group Meeting. Fifty members from the Group attended. A two course meal was served - several of our members had made delicious cottage pies and Rachel Moulden (on her own!) made all the fruit salad and meringues. The speaker, who had kindly stepped in at the last minute, was the Revd Ivor Hughes, former Vicar of St Johns Church in Yeovil who gave a most amusing talk about some of his experiences during the three years he spent in Klamath Falls in Oregon USA. We think the meeting was a success judging by all the favourable comments received. The only drawback was the washing up!
The date of our next meeting will be Wednesday 9th June when the speaker will be Andrea Ledger from St Margarets Hospice. Guests are always welcome.
BOOKS, BOOKS, BOOKS. Finally I should like to remind everyone that as the WI are running a Book Stall at the Street Fayre on 12th June we should be grateful for donations of books in good condition, particularly paperbacks. These can be handed in to Elaine Gilmore at Rose Cottage (tel 863026) or Kay McIver at Fincharn House, Broadstone Lane (tel 862220)
